COMPARATIVE RESEARCH IN DEMOCATIC CONSOLIDATION

In this class we addressed the subject of democratic consolidation considering also the opposite process of de-consolidation or democratic crisis. We focused on both classic and more recent explanations of this phenomenon, discussing the academic debate through a descriptive typology that distinguishes among 'domestic,' 'international,' 'objective' and 'subjective' ways to identify the Crisis of Democracy phenomenon.

Comparative Research on Parliaments and Public Engagement

This lecture explores the emergence of a novel parliamentary role/function: public engagement, and the progression of the legislative studies discipline in this domain. Our discussion encompasses the methods parliaments employ to involve the public (from passive to active forms), the underlying motivations (both theorethical and instrumental reasons), and the means by which we can empirically assess these initiatives within a comparative context.

COMPARATIVE RESEARCH ON CORRUPTION IN DEMOCRACY

In this class we discussed how to study corruption and its resilience in democracy through the use of survey methods. Following an introductory discussion about the specificities of the concept, we explored different ways of untangling the conceptual complexity of corruption through different types of survey items. We also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of carrying out research on corruption through survey methods and concluded with the need to set a roadmap for survey design in order to mitigate potential risks.
