From environmental to climate justice
19 Outubro 2024, 11:00 • Carla Maria Gomes
The objective of this lecture was to clarify the connections between environmental justice and climate justice, as academic scholarship. Moreover, we discussed how academic research and social movements evolved in parallel over the last few decades, since the 1980s, as well as the connections between them. The lecture also included a presentation of the key moments of climate change negotiations at the global level, and how climate justice concepts have been expressed historically in these negotiations. Concepts such as mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, resilience and transformation were clarified and contextualised. We discussed the 'Adaptation Gap Reports' and the key topics for the CoP29 (UNFCCC), which will be held in November 2024 with a focus on climate finance. The lecture closed with an interactive 'brainstorming' among the students about possible topics for PhD research.
